Child Counselling Therapy

Childhood is its own weather system — sunny days, sudden storms, and everything in between, often before a kid has the tools to make sense of it all. At Inner Sphere Wellness, our child counselling services give kids ages 6 and up a steady place to land: a space to feel safe, be curious, and build the skills to weather what’s ahead.
We know finding a counsellor for your child in Squamish and fitting it into daily life is challenging. That’s part of why offer afternoon and evening openings (in-person and virtual sessions), so support can fit around school pickup and family life instead of competing with it.

Supporting Children
Through Life's Challenges

What is EMDR Therapy?

Our Approach

Therapy Session Discussion

Kids process the world through play, not worksheets and sit-down conversations — so that’s how we work. We blend age-appropriate, trauma-informed methods with a strengths-based, playful style: using play, art, story, and movement to help kids explore what’s going on, build coping tools, and uncover the confidence and self-compassion that’s already in them. We follow each child’s pace and developmental stage, not a script, so sessions feel safe and genuine rather than clinical.

Therapy sessions are designed to:

 • Help kids process big experiences through play, not pressure

• Build coping tools and emotional resilience they’ll actually use

• Grow self-esteem and self-compassion at their own pace

• Meet them at their developmental stage — not an assumed one

• Make curiosity and connection the point, not an afterthought

Common Reasons Kids Come to Counselling

When the world feels too big Some kids carry anxiety like a backpack they can’t take off — racing thoughts at bedtime, stomachaches before school, a need to know exactly what’s coming next. We help them find ways to set the backpack down, even for a little while.

When home is changing shape Divorce, a new sibling, a move, a loss — any big shift can knock a kid’s sense of steady ground out from under them. We give them somewhere to make sense of what’s different, without needing the right words for it yet.

When feelings come out sideways Meltdowns, shutting down, snapping at everyone — big feelings sometimes show up as behaviour before they show up as words. We help kids build the vocabulary and tools to let feelings out without everything exploding.

When school or friendships feel hard Trouble making friends, school refusal, feeling like the odd one out, a shaky sense of self-worth — we help kids build the confidence and social tools to feel like they belong.

When a kid’s brain just works differently ADHD, autism, sensory sensitivities — we meet neurodivergent kids as they are, not as a problem to fix, and help them build on what already makes them, them.

When sport is who they are, not just what they do This is a sporty corner of the world, and for a lot of Sea to Sky kids, skiing, biking, climbing, or team sports aren’t a hobby — they’re identity. That can bring real pressure: performance anxiety, a hard bounce-back after injury, burnout that’s easy to miss until it isn’t. One of our counsellors specializes in working with young athletes and understands the specific weight that competition and physical setbacks can carry for a kid.

Whatever brought you here, we look at the whole picture — family, friendships, school, and everything else that’s part of a kid’s world — and connect you with other resources when that’s useful too. If none of these quite fit your situation, reach out anyway; we’ll help you figure out whether counselling is the right next step.

What to Expect in Counselling Sessions

Child counselling at Inner Sphere Wellness is playful and collaborative, not clinical. We don’t hand a six-year-old a worksheet and expect insight — we build trust through play, story, and connection, at a pace that’s right for them.

During sessions, kids can:

  • Play, draw, and create in a space where nothing is “wrong”

  • Talk about what’s happening at home, at school, and with friends — if and when they’re ready

  • Learn tools for managing big feelings

  • Explore what they’re thinking and feeling without pressure to perform

  • Build toward goals that make sense for their age and stage

  • Practice new ways of handling hard moments

Support for Families and Caregivers

We know parents show up carrying their own version of this. Some want a counsellor who can speak directly to what their child is facing. Others need to feel held themselves — a place to ask questions, get guidance, and not do this alone. We do both. Our counsellors offer parent check-ins and guidance alongside the work with your child, so you’re never left guessing what’s happening in the room. Sometimes the hardest part is knowing where to start — we’re here to help you and your child untangle things, one thread at a time, at whatever pace feels right for your family.

Some questions we’re asked about Child Counselling

  • We work with kids ages 6 and up, tailoring our approach as they grow — more play-based for younger kids, blending in more talk-based work as they get older — to meet each child developmentally and emotionally.

  • That’s really common, and completely understandable — meeting a new person and opening up to them takes time, and that’s part of the process, not a sign something’s wrong. Building a therapeutic relationship isn’t instant; every counsellor on our team expects some caution or reserve at first, especially from kids. It can help to treat it a bit like a first trip to the dentist: showing your child photos of our space or website beforehand, or even walking past our office together, can take some of the mystery — and the anxiety — out of that first visit. We’re also happy to start with a casual introductory conversation, where they can ask questions and get a feel for things before committing to anything.

  • Confidentiality is a really important part of building trust with young clients, and we take it seriously. At the start, we have an open conversation with both the child and their caregivers about how confidentiality works, including when we’re required to share information for safety reasons. Our goal is that everyone feels informed and comfortable from the very beginning.

  • It depends on what works best for your child. Sometimes we work one-on-one with the child, and other times we bring caregivers in for part of a session or meet with them separately. Families are an important part of the support system, and we always look for ways to keep everyone connected, with the child’s comfort leading the way.

  • Absolutely. We offer secure virtual counselling for children anywhere in British Columbia, so geography or a busy schedule doesn’t have to be a barrier. Whether in person at our Squamish office or online, we show up the same way — with curiosity, warmth, and zero judgment.

  • Yes — we’ve built afternoon and evening openings into our schedule, so sessions don’t have to compete with school, homework, or bedtime.

No matter your background, identity, or where you are in your journey, you're welcome here.

The Outdoor Adventurer

Living for the next summit, ride, or backcountry challenge? Therapy helps make sense of the internal terrain that's present on every adventure, supporting you through future challenges.

The Homebody

Yes, you exist — even in Squamish! Not everyone's seeking adrenaline rushes. Your quiet, interior world is just as worth exploring.

Women in the In-Between

Not quite in your 20s anymore, but "middle-aged" doesn't fit either. We offer a feminist, life-stage-aware approach to reclaiming this rich (often under-supported) era. Health, hormones, menopause, and so much more.

The Expat

Straddling cultures, missing home, navigating a new normal — therapy can be a grounding space where you don't have to translate yourself. Whether you're bringing British dry humour or longing for a deeper connection, we get it.

Caregivers, Parents & Helping Professionals

Burnout, compassion fatigue, emotional labour — if you spend your life holding others up, it's okay to need space to be held too.

First Responders

You manage high-stress, trauma-exposed roles and still have a personal life to juggle. Therapy offers a confidential space to unpack both.

Entrepreneurs & Business Folks

High-pressure work, leadership stress, impostor syndrome — therapy helps navigate the emotional weight behind high-stakes decisions and carve out that elusive work/life balance.

The "Lost Soul"

Maybe you were the Peter Pan type — seasonal work, freedom, no fixed plans. Now you want more… but you're not sure what "more" looks like. We can work with that.

The Neurospicy Crew (ADHD, Autism & Beyond)

Fast brains, unique wiring, quirky strengths — we get it. We help you better understand your brain, build on your strengths, and explore how this fits with relationships, work, and wellbeing.

Men

We know therapy can feel unfamiliar. We offer a style that suits you — whether that's private space for deep emotional work, something more grounded and pragmatic, or support accessing emotions that aren't always easy to reach.

Queer, trans, non-binary, or questioning

Whether you're out, exploring, or somewhere in between, therapy can be a space where you don't have to explain the basics. Your identity isn't up for debate — just show up as you are, and we'll meet you with curiosity and care.

Living in a body that's disabled, chronically ill, or outside the thin ideal

Whether you're navigating access barriers, medical gaslighting, or trying to rest without guilt — your body isn't the problem. Therapy is a place to be heard, supported, and real — no fixing required.

Indigenous, First Nations, and Métis

We know therapy exists within systems shaped by colonialism. Our aim is to offer space rooted in respect — for your lived experience, your knowledge, and your definition of healing.

BIPOC folks in mostly white spaces

Code-switching, cultural load, intergenerational weight — it's exhausting. Therapy can be a space where you don't have to translate or shrink your experience to fit.
