Depression Counselling
Squamish

Depression doesn't always look the way people expect. Yes, for some, it may mean crying in bed or being unable to function. Yet for many people, it shows up quietly, as persistent sadness, a low mood that won't lift, or a slow disconnection from life. For others, it arrives suddenly after something difficult, or builds over time until the weight becomes hard to ignore.

However, it's showing up for you; it's real. And you deserve support.

Depression affects mood, energy, motivation, and how connected you feel to yourself and the people around you. It can make ordinary things feel harder than they should, and meaningful things feel further away. Depression counselling offers a safe and confidential space to better understand what's happening for you and to find ways to navigate it, not just survive it.

What is EMDR Therapy?

Different Ways Depression Can Show Up

Thinking Man

Depression comes in many forms, and not all of them are easy to recognize.

Functioning depression is one of the most commonly overlooked mental health issues. Life on the outside still appears together; you're going to work, keeping up with responsibilities, maybe even seeming fine to those around you. But inside, something feels off. Flat. Effortful. This kind of depression is often dismissed, including by the person experiencing it.

Chronic depression is long-standing or recurring. For some people, it's not a crisis moment but rather a low-grade constant in the background, something that's just always been there to some degree. Persistent feelings of emptiness or low self-esteem can become so familiar that they feel like personality traits rather than symptoms. It can be hard to know what you are, and what depression is, let alone imagining feeling differently when this has been the baseline for so long.

Situational depression can emerge after significant life events, losses, or an accumulation of stressors. A job change, a relationship ending, a move, grief, burnout, or difficult life transitions, sometimes life simply piles up, and depression is the natural response to carrying too much for too long.

It's also worth noting that depression doesn't always present the same way across different people. Men and women, for example, often experience depression differently, and some presentations, like irritability, anger, or emotional numbness, are less often talked about but just as valid.

Common Experiences

You might be dealing with depression if you're noticing things like:

  • Low mood, heaviness, or a kind of emotional numbness

  • Loss of interest in things that used to matter or bring you joy

  • Persistent feelings of hopelessness, or a sense that things won't improve

  • Negative thought patterns or a persistent inner critic with low self-esteem

  • Fatigue and low energy that doesn't go away with rest

  • Feeling angry, pressured, or emotionally pent up

  • Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or following through

You don't need to be experiencing all of these, or experiencing them all the time, for your struggles to be real and worthy of support.

How We Work in Therapy

Depression therapy at Inner Sphere Wellness is built on a relationship. Before anything else, we focus on creating a non-judgmental space where you feel safe, understood, and not judged. That foundation matters; it's what makes the therapeutic work actually work.

Our registered clinical counsellors draw from a range of evidence-based therapies and therapeutic modalities to support clients dealing with depression. We take an integrative approach, meaning we don't rely on a single method; instead, we tailor our therapeutic interventions to what works best for you.

A few things you can expect:

  • Validation before solutions. We're not here to fix you or tell you to think positively. We're here to help you feel genuinely understood, and to work from there, offering personalized support rather than a generic plan treating depression.

  • A client-centred, collaborative approach. You're the expert on your own experience. We bring knowledge and perspective; you bring everything you know about yourself. Together, that's where meaningful change happens.

  • A focus on living meaningfully alongside depression, not just eliminating symptoms. For some people, especially those with chronic depression, the goal isn't to feel low again; it's to build a life that feels worth living even on the harder days. That includes building emotional regulation skills, self-awareness, and self-compassion that carry beyond the therapy room.

  • Space to explore medication as a support option. We offer a space to explore your thoughts and feelings about medication. While prescribing is done by physicians, we know those appointments may feel short or rushed - depression counselling is a great place to process your feelings about it, weigh your options, and figure out what feels right for you.

We also recognize that depression often doesn't travel alone. If you're also managing anxiety, social anxiety, relationship issues, past trauma, or other emotional challenges, we can hold that too. Our holistic approach to mental health care means we look at the whole picture, not just one symptom in isolation.

Who We Work With

Our clinical counsellors offer depression counselling in Squamish to adults and teens experiencing depression in any of its forms, whether it's a first depressive episode or something you've been living with for years.
We also work with individuals dealing with burnout, grief, loss, or major life transitions that have left them feeling stuck, flat, or disconnected from who they used to be. If you're struggling with low mood alongside other mental health concerns, including managing anxiety, low self-esteem, or relationship issues, we offer personalized support to meet you where you are.

Depression comes in all shapes, sizes, and intensities. You don't need to be at rock bottom to deserve support, and you don't need a formal diagnosis to reach out. If something feels off and it's affecting your quality of life, that's enough to begin your healing journey.

We offer in-person sessions in downtown Squamish and virtual sessions for those across BC.

Common Questions We're Asked

  • No. You don't need a diagnosis, a referral, or any paperwork to begin depression counselling. If you're struggling and you think working with a mental health professional might help, that's all you need. We'll figure out the rest together.

  • Yes. Long-standing depression can absolutely respond to therapy. Chronic depression often has deep roots in past experiences, and evidence-based approaches like cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, or psychodynamic psychotherapy can help you gain a deeper understanding of what's been driving those persistent feelings. Many people find that therapy helps them understand themselves in ways that create lasting change, even after years of struggling.

  • We hear this a lot, and it makes sense. When you're in the thick of a depressive episode, it can be hard to believe anything will help. You might feel too tired, too hopeless, or too worn down to imagine therapy working. That's okay, you don't have to feel hopeful to show up. Our counsellors provide a supportive space where you're met exactly where you are, and we go from there. Many people find that even a few sessions begin to shift something.

  • Yes. Depression therapy and medication can work very well together, and we're comfortable working with clients who are on antidepressants or considering them. We're not able to prescribe medication ourselves; that's done through your physician or psychiatrist, but our mental health professionals can absolutely be part of a broader mental health care team. If you have questions or mixed feelings about medication, counselling is a great space to work through those, too.

  • Yes. Client safety and confidentiality are central to how we work. Everything shared in your sessions stays within a safe and confidential space, with only the standard legal and ethical exceptions that your counsellor will explain at the outset.

No matter your background, identity, or where you are in your journey, you're welcome here.

The Outdoor Adventurer

Living for the next summit, ride, or backcountry challenge? Therapy helps make sense of the internal terrain that's present on every adventure, supporting you through future challenges.

The Homebody

Yes, you exist — even in Squamish! Not everyone's seeking adrenaline rushes. Your quiet, interior world is just as worth exploring.

Women in the In-Between

Not quite in your 20s anymore, but "middle-aged" doesn't fit either. We offer a feminist, life-stage-aware approach to reclaiming this rich (often under-supported) era. Health, hormones, menopause, and so much more.

The Expat

Straddling cultures, missing home, navigating a new normal — therapy can be a grounding space where you don't have to translate yourself. Whether you're bringing British dry humour or longing for a deeper connection, we get it.

Caregivers, Parents & Helping Professionals

Burnout, compassion fatigue, emotional labour — if you spend your life holding others up, it's okay to need space to be held too.

First Responders

You manage high-stress, trauma-exposed roles and still have a personal life to juggle. Therapy offers a confidential space to unpack both.

Entrepreneurs & Business Folks

High-pressure work, leadership stress, impostor syndrome — therapy helps navigate the emotional weight behind high-stakes decisions and carve out that elusive work/life balance.

The "Lost Soul"

Maybe you were the Peter Pan type — seasonal work, freedom, no fixed plans. Now you want more… but you're not sure what "more" looks like. We can work with that.

The Neurospicy Crew (ADHD, Autism & Beyond)

Fast brains, unique wiring, quirky strengths — we get it. We help you better understand your brain, build on your strengths, and explore how this fits with relationships, work, and wellbeing.

Men

We know therapy can feel unfamiliar. We offer a style that suits you — whether that's private space for deep emotional work, something more grounded and pragmatic, or support accessing emotions that aren't always easy to reach.

Queer, trans, non-binary, or questioning

Whether you're out, exploring, or somewhere in between, therapy can be a space where you don't have to explain the basics. Your identity isn't up for debate — just show up as you are, and we'll meet you with curiosity and care.

Living in a body that's disabled, chronically ill, or outside the thin ideal

Whether you're navigating access barriers, medical gaslighting, or trying to rest without guilt — your body isn't the problem. Therapy is a place to be heard, supported, and real — no fixing required.

Indigenous, First Nations, and Métis

We know therapy exists within systems shaped by colonialism. Our aim is to offer space rooted in respect — for your lived experience, your knowledge, and your definition of healing.

BIPOC folks in mostly white spaces

Code-switching, cultural load, intergenerational weight — it's exhausting. Therapy can be a space where you don't have to translate or shrink your experience to fit.
