Neurodivergent Counselling Squamish
You deserve a space that actually fits you.

Life can be messy, and if you've spent your life feeling like you think differently, move differently, or feel like the square peg in a round hole, walking into a counselling therapy space can bring up a lot. Sometimes it feels like everything is one big tangled ball of string, and you're not sure where to even start pulling. Maybe past experiences of being misunderstood, labelled, or told to try harder have shaped how safe it feels to open up. Maybe you're navigating a formal diagnosis, a recent life transition, or simply a long-held sense that something has always been a little different about how you experience the world.
At Inner Sphere Wellness, we offer neurodivergent counselling in Squamish through a neurodiversity affirming, person-centred approach grounded in trauma-informed care and built around you. Not the other way around. Our registered clinical counsellors bring both professional training and genuine understanding to this work, and we offer a free consultation so you can get a feel for the fit before committing.
Your Inner Sphere. Your Journey.
What We Mean by Neurodivergence
Neurodivergence describes differences in how people think, process information, and experience the world. It's not a flaw in the code; it's just a different kind of wiring. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, AuDHD, sensory sensitivities, learning differences... however your brain does its thing, we celebrate the quirks that make you, you.
There's growing recognition that neurodivergence looks different across different people. Women, non-binary folks, and people who didn't fit traditional diagnostic stereotypes have often been overlooked or misdiagnosed. Many neurodivergent individuals are arriving at self-understanding or formal diagnosis much later in life and doing a lot of untangling along the way. Neurodivergence is simply part of human diversity, not a deficit to be corrected.

Why Neurodiversity Affirming Therapy Matters
Therapy spaces haven't always felt welcoming for neurodivergent people. Traditional approaches can feel like they're trying to sand down the parts of you that don't fit a neurotypical world. That's not what we're here for.
Neurodiversity-affirming therapy starts with the understanding that your brain is valid. Our job isn't to fix you or push you toward a version of yourself that feels more "normal." It's to work with you, as you are, and to support you in moving toward your authentic self.

That means:
-
Understanding your needs and your own experience as legitimate, not as deficits to correct.
-
Adapting how we work together to fit your neurodivergent processing styles.
-
Exploring both the strengths and joys of neurodivergence alongside the real challenges.
-
Making space for the impact of ableism and how it has shaped your self-esteem and the way you see yourself.
-
Honouring your special interests as part of who you are, not distractions from "real" topics.
Whatever you bring into the room, we'll work through it together, one thread at a time.
Our team includes neurodiversity affirming therapists, many with lived experience of ADHD and autism. We know this stuff and love supporting clients with it as it’s part of our worlds too.
Diagnosis and Self-Identification
We don't provide assessments at Inner Sphere Wellness.
We do believe that self-diagnosis is valid. Access to formal assessment is not equal, it can be costly, gatekept, or shaped by systems that weren't designed with everyone in mind. You don't need a piece of paper to understand your own experience, or to access support. Being self-identified is enough to begin.
That said, if you are pursuing a formal diagnosis, therapy can be a meaningful part of the therapeutic process.
We can offer space to:
-
Process what comes up before, during, and after the assessment.
-
Work through questions of identity and what a diagnosis does or doesn't mean for you.
-
Explore the help and the complexity of labels together.
Labels can bring real relief and clarity. They can also feel limiting or strange, depending on the day. Both things are true, and both deserve space.
Making Sense of Your Experience
A lot of what we explore together is simply about understanding. Understanding how your brain works, why certain things have been harder than they should have been, and slowly letting go of the story that the difficulty was your fault.
Think of it like a tangled ball of string. We're not going to yank on it and hope for the best. We'll find one thread, follow it gently, and see where it leads. Then we'll find the next one.
For many neurodivergent adults and young adults, this work involves looking at patterns that were never quite named: chronic stress and overwhelm that never seemed to let up, emotional dysregulation that felt confusing or embarrassing, or nervous system responses that didn't make sense until now.
Some of what we untangle together: masking fatigue, sensory overload, executive dysfunction, managing emotions and emotional regulation, low mood, burnout, and the self-criticism that builds up after years of not meeting expectations that were never quite right for you in the first place. We also make space for body image, complex trauma and other traumatic experiences, chronic illness, and the particular ways neurodivergence can shape family relationships and relationship building.
Together, we work on developing strategies, building self-compassion, and growing self-acceptance. And we work on letting go of the expectations that don't actually fit you.
Our Approach
Neurodiversity affirming. Trauma-informed. Non-pathologizing. Flexible.

We draw on a range of evidence-based practices and adapt them to fit your needs. Depending on what you're working through, this might include Internal Family Systems, narrative therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, compassion-focused therapy, psychodynamic therapy, somatic therapy and somatic practices, and trauma-informed therapy approaches. We work collaboratively with you throughout the therapeutic process to figure out what's most useful for your mental health and well-being.
We don't follow a rigid script in sessions. Conversations can move between topics. You don't need to maintain eye contact. Fidgeting, movement, and any comfort tools you need are genuinely welcome.
For clients who benefit from eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), we adapt the approach to fit your sensory needs. There are many ways to engage with bilateral stimulation, and we work with what works for you.
Our in-person therapy space in Downtown Squamish is designed to feel calm and comfortable. Therapy with us is a blend of reflective and practical, meaningful in session and genuinely useful in real life. We want your healing journey to feel like yours.
What This Can Look Like
Every neurodivergent person's experience is their own. But sometimes it helps to see a few threads that might feel familiar.
Late diagnosis
Someone who has spent decades wondering why things feel harder than they seem to for everyone else finally has language for their experience. Therapy becomes a space to grieve what wasn't caught sooner, rebuild self-esteem, and reconnect with their authentic self.
Masking fatigue and autistic burnout
A person who has spent years masking in work and social settings finds themselves exhausted and overwhelmed. Things that used to feel manageable no longer do. In therapy, they begin to untangle what happened, what their nervous system actually needs, and what recovery can look like.
Executive dysfunction and ADHD
Someone who has always been seen as capable but inconsistent comes to understand that their struggles with focus and follow-through aren't a personal failing. They begin developing strategies that actually account for how their brain works, and start to release the weight of long-held self-criticism.
AuDHD experience
Someone navigating both ADHD and autistic traits finds themselves caught between needing structure and resisting it. Nothing quite works, and the frustration adds up. Therapy becomes a space to explore what might actually fit, without the pressure of one-size answers.
The weight of relationship challenges
A person who has always found relationship building difficult, navigating social rules that feel invisible to everyone but them, begins to understand how their neurodivergent processing styles have shaped their relationships, and starts developing relationship skills that feel authentic rather than performed. This work can also support people working through relationship issues with partners, friends, and family.
These are simplified examples. Your experience will be unique to you.
Things To Know
No. Being self-identified is valid, and you don't need a diagnosis to begin. Many people come to us mid-exploration or with a long-held sense of difference that has never had a name. That's enough to start.
Absolutely. The early stages of understanding your neurodivergence can bring up a lot. Therapy is a good space to slow down, make sense of what you're noticing, and begin seeking therapy on your own terms.
Honestly, that's most people who walk through our door. The early work is just getting curious, with a bit of fun mixed in, about what's underneath the mask. No need to show up with a tidy answer. We'll figure it out together.
No. We're not here to normalize you or push you toward a neurotypical way of functioning. Our goal is to help you understand yourself more fully, work with your brain rather than against it, and build a life that fits who you actually are.
The core difference is the approach. Neurodiversity affirming therapy actively adapts to your neurodivergent processing styles and sensory needs, rather than expecting you to adapt to a standard format. We bring awareness of how masking fatigue, emotional dysregulation, executive dysfunction, and ableism shape experience. And we hold your neurodivergence as a valid and meaningful part of who you are.
